Welcome to the February 2011 Edition of Cyber News, an ad free, spam free online magazine emanating from Stanley's Studio in Phoenix, Arizona.  In Cyber News we'll try to pass along some useful tips and information about your computer, the Internet, computer products, digital photography, other related topics, and some stuff that's not related at all. If just one thing you read here can help you in your computing world then it's worth the time of putting this together.

The biggest sporting event in the world, Super Bowl 45 is February 6th, and it just might be the biggest party day too.  Sports bars will be packed and people will have parties in their homes as millions will watch the big game between the Packers and the Steelers.  Half time entertainment will be provided by the "Black Eyed Peas."

Speaking of entertainment, in my opinion, American Idol is off to a great start this season and I talked about this recently in my Blog.

February 14th is Valentines Day, so don't forget that "Someone Special" in your life.

Big news this month is the marriage of the iPhone and Verizon.  After years of speculation and rumors its finally happening and we're going to see millions of AT&T customers make the switch.  The iPhone has definitely taken the headlines as the best smart phone on the market but customers have been disgruntled with service from AT&T.  One hint that I'll throw out however before you run to Verizon and purchase the iPhone 4 is that Apple will release the iPhone 5 in June, so it might be smart to wait for the latest and greatest before signing up for a two year contract.

The Internet is part of our lives and most of us would be hard pressed without it.  Email, social networking, research, entertainment, news, it's all there.  That's the good part, but there are evils lurking in the wings.  Viruses, scams, malware, spyware; all those pesky things that want to bring us down.  Simple things you can do to prevent from becoming a victim are outlined in the following paragraph.  Other tips to avoid Internet scams are provided by CNET's Dennis O'Reilly.

Did you run CCleaner today?  Did you run Malwarebytes this week?  Did you defragement in the last 30 days?  Don't wait for something to go wrong with your computer before performing these simple computer tasks.  CCleaner, once a day, Malwarebytes once a week, and defrag once a month.  Why pay someone to fix your computer when you can do these simple things to keep your machine running as smoothly as the day you bought it!  Details here.

So many people on this earth, each one with their own unique personalities and talents.  Most individuals acquire and groom talents with age, but there are exceptions.  There are those individuals that seem to be born with IT.  An example is 12 year old Caroline Costa appearing on France's "Incredible Talent" as she sings Christina Aguilera's song "Hurt."  Young, beautiful, innocent; if only the world could sing with her.  After her performance, you will probably want to give her a big hug.

Hugs.  I was never a hugger.  Men don't hug.  I was never a hugger until I met my wife; she hugged everyone.  At first it was strange to me, wasn't part of my make up but slowly it matured and now I hug without a thought.  We have to hug our friends and the ones we love, for life can change in a heartbeat.  One minute we are here, the next minute we're gone.  Maybe it's time to tell someone TODAY how much you appreciate them....before it's too late.

After listening to Caroline sing just part of the song, now let's listen to Christina Aguilera sing the whole version while watching the words.  I think it will sit you back in your seat, especially if you have lost a loved one and didn't take the time to say....................

If you love the Oscars you can get the lowdown on all the nominations before the program airs on February 27th on ABC.  It's all right here!

The Internet has been abuzz recently with tales of fraudsters who can now steal your credit card accounts just by walking past you with an electronic scannerI even had emails from clients and Cyber News readers asking me my opinion. The key here is that "just by walking past you" is misleading.  It actually takes the thief at least 30 seconds to hold a scanner very close to your billfold or purse, and that's a long time for you not to be suspicious.  Details from The Wall Street Journal.

Facebook is now asking for your address and cell phone number. If you are concerned about online security, as I would be, here's the story from CNN, and CNET.

I love my apple iPad, but recently a certain someone at our house has taken it over.  Seems she likes to sit on the couch while we watch TV and play "Bookworm."  Will I ever get my hands on it again?  You can see if you like it on Yahoo games.  Read the Game Info first for the directions, which are pretty simple, then try not to get hooked!  The lady of the house has a high score of 265,860!

Remember the Smothers Brothers from years past? I always thought they were very funny; Dick playing the straight man while Tom delivered the funny lines.  His facial expressions cracked me up.  They recently appeared on Craig Ferguson's late night show and Tommy talked about being a pilot.  Watch this and have a good laugh.

Once photography entered the digital world, cameras got better by the day!  How about a 14 megapixel pocket camera with lots of features and a built in projector. I haven't seen this camera in action yet, but it sure sounds interesting.  Take a photo or a movie and instantly show it on almost any surface!  It's the new Nikon Coolpix S1100pj and you can see what it's all about here.  This camera retails from $279 to $349 depending on where you buy it.

Now if you want a camera that the high fashion photographers use and money is no object, you can have Phase One's new 80 megapixel IQ180.  This piece of equipment is made in Denmark and sells for $43,000!   I'm thinking about ordering one which is due out in April, and that will give me a couple of months to sell the house first.  You can look at it here, but please don't touch!

If you're thinking about buying that Phase One camera, you can probably afford Italy's new Pagani Huayra supercar.  Named after an ancient Andean god of wind, the Italian supercar is the latest from one of the world’s smallest and most bespoke automakers, Pagani. Never heard of it? That’s because it doesn’t sell cars in the United States, yet.  Take a look at this beauty and its pricetag!

I found a photo site that I know you will enjoy!  It features 360 degree photos and all you have to do is move your mouse left, right, up, down, or in and out.  Fun stuff from www.3d-exposure.com

Photo Tip of the Month:  I am certainly not an expert on photography, but I do give photo seminars around the country.  My talk, entitled "The ABC's of Digital Photography" covers the basics of taking photos. One such seminar was presented to the Quad Cities Computer Society this fall and was recorded by Sands Media Productions of Bettendorf, Iowa. You might enjoy viewing what was broadcast on "Paula Sands Live" on the local NBC affiliate. You might also enjoy "Postcards from Arizona" that were recorded on a recent visit to Phoenix, by the Quad City couple, and also aired on Paula's show.  Part I and Part II.

Check out my personal Photo Site.  You'll see over 1,400 pictures in 38 galleries that I've taken from around the world.  We have had over 369,000 views on our Photo Site, with over 12,000 views last month, thanks in part to Cyber News readers!  New photos have recently been added to the following galleries: Arizona, Camping, Cars, Family & Friends, Misc Outdoor Shots, Odds n Ends, People, Photo Effects, Portraits, and Sedona.
